Did you know, not every European country uses the Euro?
The Euro is currently the official currency of 19 EU Member Countries, however there are still many popular European destinations that use their own local currencies. Why not just buy Euro's anyway and convert them when you get to one of these countries? Because you are putting yourself through a double conversion and may end up paying a premium for your money. Avoid costly re-conversions by getting the right currency upfront.
What if my currency is not available to load?
If the currency you need is not available, it doesn't mean that you can't travel with a Cash Passport Platinum Mastercard - it means that you have the option to load Australian Dollars onto the card and the card will convert to the local currency when you make a purchase overseas. You will receive the Mastercard Cash Passport Spend Rate of the day with no further currency conversion fees charged on top. This makes Cash Passport Platinum Mastercard one of the best travel cards on the market. Please feel welcome to contact our team if you would like to discuss how to load a Cash Passport Platinum Mastercard where you require a currency that is not able to be loaded directly onto the card.
Using a prepaid travel card for cruising, hotel bonds or any hire pre-authorisations.
When you check in at your hotel or hop on-board a cruise ship, you are often required to supply a credit or debit card in which the ship or hotel will put a hold on a certain amount of money for a security bond. These holds (pre-authorisations) can take up to 2 weeks to be released back into your account, meaning you don’t have access to that amount of money for that period of time.
Be careful of tying up your travel card funds with payment pre-authorisations, as it can take some time for the cruise ship/hotel/merchant to release the hold - meaning you don't have access to the money on your travel card. Consider using a credit card or bank issued debit card for these types of holds, as you won’t actually be charged, there will only be a small "hold" put in place as a security measure for the merchant. Please contact us if you are unsure and a travel money specialist will be happy to assist you.
