ATM access

ATM access is widespread in Germany, with ATM’s operating 24 hours a day and suitable for international debit or credit card use. If you are staying in a remote area, you can search here to find ATM’s available in your location.

Cash for Germany

The official currency of Germany is the Euro (formally the Deutsche Mark). Cash is a travel essential and can save you time and money on many occasions. Having local currency on hand can:

  • be handy for small purchases such as something to eat or drink
  • give you an alternative method of payment in the event you are unable to pay with a card or you are charged an additional fee to pay with a card
  • save you from having to pay high commission fees to exchange money in popular tourist areas when you arrive in Singapore

It can be reasonably expensive to exchange to Euro’s in popular tourist areas in Germany, so consider saving some money by pre-organising some Euro cash for incidentals before you depart.

Using your credit or debit card

Remember to check in with your bank to make sure you are fully aware of the fees you will be charged to make purchases or to withdraw money from an ATM in Germany. Click here to see common credit/debit card fees and charges before you speak with your bank. You can access money fee-free in Germany with a Mastercard Multi-currency Cash Passport card, read more about saving money with a travel card here. If you are planning to take your debit card with you, It is also important to make sure that your card will work overseas. Look on the front and back of your card and make sure that there is a Visa, Mastercard or American Express symbol on the card. If there are none of these symbols, there may be a Maestro or Cirrus logo – these cards will only work at ATM’s that display the Cirrus or Maestro logo. Please feel welcome to contact us if you are unsure if your credit or debit card will work. Always prepare for the event that your card is lost, stolen or skimmed, by having a back-up source of funds available. Access to emergency assistance is a must, you can get emergency cash in as little as 20 minutes if you have a Mastercard Multi-currency Cash Passport Card that is designed for travel. Read more about the travel card here.

Chip and PIN debit and credit cards

You will notice that banks are now issuing new credit and debit cards with a microchip embedded in the front of the card. This means that the card can be inserted into the EFTPOS machine rather than being swiped and requesting a signature. This technology is becoming increasingly common and especially throughout Europe – and will eventually be the only form of payment accepted in a bid to increase card security. At this time, both chip and chip-less cards are generally accepted however you may find more difficulties in the near future. It is particularly important that your card has a chip if you are travelling to the UK as you will find it extremely difficult to use a card without a chip.
