South African Rand cash
The official currency of South Africa is the South African Rand. While you may want to consider your safety depending on where exactly you are visiting, cash is a travel essential and can save you time and money on many occasions. Having local currency on hand can:
- be handy for small purchases such as something to eat or drink
- give you an alternative method of payment in the event you are unable to pay with a card or you are charged an additional fee to pay with a card
- give you access to money in the event an ATM does not accept your card or is out of order
- save you from paying high commission fees to exchange money in popular tourist areas
- give you access to money if you are on a guided tour and unable to locate an ATM
Using your credit or debit card
