Currency for India

The official currency of India is the Indian Rupee. Whilst you will have access to ATM’s in main cities throughout India, if you’re planning on strolling through the Delhi markets or heading a little out of town for some sight-seeing or activities – then you will need some pocket cash. Not all small stores will accept your card over the counter, so cash is a travel essential and can save you time and money on many occasions. Having local currency on hand can:

  • be handy for small purchases such as something to eat or drink
  • give you an alternative method of payment in the event you are unable to pay with a card or you are charged an additional fee to pay with a card
  • save you having to find an ATM when you stumble across a hidden market gem
  • give you access to money in the event an ATM does not accept your card or is out of order

You can purchase Indian Rupee cash at Exchange Now at highly competitive exchange rates. Buy Indian Rupee online or visit us in-store.

ATM access

ATM access is widespread in main cities in India, with most ATM’s operating 24 hours a day and most are suitable for international debit or credit card use. If you are staying in a remote area or smaller city, you can search here for a guide* to ATM’s available in your location. Keep in mind that your card and the ATM is likely to have a maximum daily withdrawal limit, so plan ahead to make sure you have the cash you need. If you are unable to find an ATM location in the area you are staying, Indian Rupee cash will be a necessity and it is important to arrange a back-up source of funds in the event you need more money quickly.

Using your credit or debit card

Remember to check in with your bank to make sure you are fully aware of the fees you will be charged to make purchases or to withdraw money from an ATM in India. Click here to see common credit/debit card fees and charges before you speak with your bank. If you are planning to take your debit card with you, It is also important to make sure that your card will work overseas. Look on the front and back of your card and make sure that there is a Visa, Mastercard or American Express symbol on the card. If there are none of these symbols, there may be a Maestro or Cirrus logo – these cards will only work at ATM’s that display the Cirrus or Maestro logo. Please feel welcome to contact us if you are unsure if your credit or debit card will work. Always prepare for the event that your card is lost, stolen or skimmed, by having a back-up source of funds available. What options are available to you if you are unable to use your bank card when you are in India? Access to emergency assistance is a must, you can get emergency cash in as little as 20 minutes if you have a Mastercard Multi-currency Cash Passport Card that is designed for travel.
