Cash is an essential in Cambodia

Whilst the use of credit cards is increasing in popular tourist areas, Cambodia is very much a cash economy. As we mentioned, the official currency used in Cambodia is the Riel - however you will find limited options to purchase Riel before you enter the country (and pay close attention to the exchange rate as it can be extremely expensive to purchase outside of Cambodia). The US Dollar is the favoured currency, so exchanging this before you depart will mean you can secure a competitive exchange rate in Perth and you are ready to spend when you land. Small notes are of a benefit as larger notes can be harder to break or find change – and by small we mean small, right down to a 1 US Dollar note as these are handy for taxi’s, markets and small purchases. It is also important to ensure your notes are in good condition to avoid them being refused. When you pay with US Dollars, you may be provided with Riel in change if your purchase was of a a small value. Remember to get rid of any unused Riel’s before you leave the country as you will have limited exchange options you return to Australia and may end up paying fees. US Dollar cash is a travel essential and can save you time and money on many occasions. Having cash on hand can:

  • be handy for small purchases such as something to eat or drink
  • give you an alternative method of payment in the event you are unable to pay with a card or you are charged an additional fee to pay with a card
  • save you having to find an ATM when you stumble across a hidden market gem
  • give you access to money in the event an ATM does not accept your card or is out of order

ATM access

ATM’s are available in most popular tourist areas such as Phnom Penh, Siem Reap and Sihanoukville, and ATM availability is increasing throughout Cambodia. If you’re heading a little off the beaten track, it might be worth while checking out ATM availability – contact us if you would like us to search for an ATM in your location. You will receive US Dollars when you withdraw from the ATM and you may receive larger denominations that are a little inconvenient for smaller purchases, so having pre-organised plenty of small denomination US Dollars can really save you the hassle.

Using your credit or debit card

Remember to check in with your bank to make sure you are fully aware of the fees you will be charged to make purchases or to withdraw money from an ATM in Cambodia. Click here to see common credit/debit card fees and charges before you speak with your bank. If you are planning to take your debit card with you, It is also important to make sure that your card will work overseas. Look on the front and back of your card and make sure that there is a Visa, Mastercard or American Express symbol on the card. If there are none of these symbols, there may be a Maestro or Cirrus logo – these cards will only work at ATM’s that display the Cirrus or Maestro logo. Please feel welcome to contact us if you are unsure if your credit or debit card will work. Always prepare for the event that your card is lost, stolen or skimmed, by having a back-up source of funds available. Access to emergency assistance is a must, you can get emergency cash in as little as 20 minutes if you have a Mastercard Multi-currency Cash Passport Card that is designed for travel.
